Amid a relationship crisis between Uruguay’s players and their coach, Marcelo Bielsa, Celeste sought an emotional victory on Friday night (15/11), at the Centenário stadium, in Montevideo.
After Colombia equalized in the 50th minute, Uruguay went for the victory in the 55th minute, on the last play, to the madness of those present at the Centenary. The 3-2 winning goals were scored by Davinson Sánchez (own goal), Aguirre and Ugarte for Uruguay; and Quintero and Andrés Gómez for the Colombians.
With the victory, Uruguay reaches 19 points and is now second in the South American qualifiers, pushing Colombia into third place, also with 19, but losing on goal difference.
In the next round, Colombia faces Ecuador in Barranquilla, on Tuesday (11/19), at 8pm. Uruguay will play against Brazil at Arena Fonte Nova, also on Tuesday, at 9:45 pm.
