The G20 summit brought together the leaders of the world’s largest economies in Rio de Janeiro. President Lula (PT) obtained the adhesion of all the group’s countries to one of his priority proposals, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. Despite initial resistance, Argentina, led by Javier Milei, also supported the initiative, but with reservations.
Political adversaries, the two leaders exchanged cold greetings at the beginning of the event this Monday (18). The summit ends this Tuesday (19), but there is still no consensus on the final declaration. In recent days, the actions and statements of the heads of state have stood out as the meeting approaches.
On the eve of the meeting, American President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use long-range missiles supplied by the United States to attack Russia. Furthermore, the Democrat visited Manaus (AM) this Sunday (17) and made official the contribution of another US$50 million (R$289.5 million) to the Amazon Fund.
Before arriving in Brazil, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, declared that his government will not sign the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur “as is”. Lula now defends that the agreement be closed this year.
The dictator of China, Xi Jinping, was received at the hotel where he will stay in Rio de Janeiro, this Sunday (17), by a kind of “fan crowd” made up of dozens of Chinese people with flags. In an article published in Folha de S. Paulo on Saturday (16), Xi Jinping argued that it is time for Brazil and China to “take responsibility” for defending the interests of developing countries in the Global South.
