The instability of fuel prices has led many drivers to replace their vehicles with electric cars. Among the disadvantages of electric vehicles is the purchase price, as well as the reduced autonomy, when purchased with so-called “traditional” vehicles. However, electricity is cheaper than any fuel, and there are other advantages that many are unaware of., one of them associated with parking meter payments.
Firstly, trams are exempt from paying the Single Circulation Tax (IUC) and Vehicle Tax (ISV). In addition to these two advantages, there is a third, which consists of the exemption or reduction of parking meter fees, in some areas of the country that are encouraging the development of electric mobility. Therefore, buying an electric vehicle is the solution to being exempt from paying some parking meters.
Lisbon is one of the cities that allows electric vehicles to pay free parking in spaces determined by the Lisbon Municipal Parking Company (EMEL). In any case, to be exempt from paying for parking meters you will have to have a green plate, which costs 12 euros annually.
According to , this sign allows the parking of electric vehicles in all Limited Duration Parking Zones, in charged spaces, without having to pay the parking fee and without a time limit. However, there are other parts of the country where electric vehicles do not need to pay a parking meter, as long as they have a blue plate, which identifies the car as electric.
The municipalities of Beja, Guimarães, Mirandela, Oeiras, Oliveira de Azeméis, Póvoa do Varzim, Setúbal and Ribeira Brava are those that exempt electric vehicles from parking meter payments. On the other hand, the municipality of Funchal only offers a 50% discount on parking for residents with an electric car. The municipality of Porto also offers a 15% discount on the monthly fee for municipal parking lots.
For now, no municipality in the Algarve is encouraging electric mobility through this parking benefit.
