Federal deputy Alfredo Gaspar (AL) will ask the leadership of his party to call a meeting later this year to decide whether or not the party remains in the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva government.

The motivation for the request is an interview with the leader of the bench, Elmar Nascimento (BA), in which he indicates that the party should give up its presidential pre-candidacy due to having three ministries in the federal government.

“It is important that we define a course in 2024, put this into discussion immediately. There is no reason to leave it until next year”, says Gaspar.

He advocates that the Union hand over the portfolios it holds and begin preparing its own candidacy for the Presidency.

“I agree that there is no reason to have ministries thinking about their own candidacy. Now that the municipal election has passed, in which the party has grown, we are better equipped to hold this debate”, he states.

Gaspar says that the name of the party’s candidate for president should be discussed later, but signals support for Caiado. “He is an excellent option, but it has to be a collective decision.”

His opinion that it is necessary to leave the government, says the parliamentarian, is motivated by the assessment that the Lula administration has several problems.

“União Brasil has done everything for governability. But in the current situation, it is not possible to say that the government is doing well. Public accounts are exploding, organized crime is getting stronger,” he states.
