Convictions for spousal homicide fell 36% last year

The DGPJ states that the number of people convicted of homicide, which includes homicide in which the victim is a spouse or partner, showed a decreasing trend between 2007 and 2022, going from 306 convictions in 2007 to 211 in 2022 , a reduction of 31%.

The DGPJ also indicates that the proportion of people convicted of homicide in which the victim is a spouse or partner over the total number of people convicted of homicide in the courts of first instance is around a range between 5.2% (minimum value in 2023) and 14.7% (maximum value in 2016).

Statistics also show that there is “a strong prevalence” of cases in which the person convicted of spousal homicide is a man.

DGPJ statistics also show that last year, when 16 people were convicted and in around 93% of cases the victim was a woman, attempted qualified homicide and qualified homicide were the predominant types of crimes.

“When comparing the number of victims in 2023, taking into account gender and type of homicide, it is observed that for qualified homicide, attempted qualified homicide and simple homicide the victims are all female. Victims of attempted homicide are exclusively male”, conclude the data.
