The Algarve has established itself as the best beach destination in the world, Braga was once again considered the best emerging destination and Lisbon is the city of choice for urban breaks,
Portugal stood out in this year’s edition of the World Travel Awardsknown as the “Oscar of Tourism”, winning 19 awards in a ceremony held on Sunday, in Funchal.
Among the awards, Braga was recognized for the second consecutive year as the “Best Emerging Destination“. The Algarve reaffirmed its excellence by being voted “Best Beach Destination in the World” for the third time, after winning in 2020 and 2021. Lisbon also shone, being distinguished as the “Best Destination for Urban Getaways” and the “Best Heritage City” . Porto added to the success by being voted “Best Metropolitan Destination by the Sea”.
Madeira maintained its reign, being chosen for the 10th consecutive time as “Best Island Destination”. The Azores won the award for “Best Destination for Adventure Tourism”. Among national attractions, the Passadiços do Paiva were distinguished as “Best Attraction for Adventure Tourism“, while Dark Sky Alqueva was recognized as “Best Responsible Tourism Project”. In the area of conservation, Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua stood out as the “Best Conservation Company in the World”.
In the aviation sector, TAP once again received the awards for “Leading Company in Air Links to Africa” and “South America”. In the hotel sector, Portugal achieved important distinctions: Amazing Evolution was considered a leader in boutique hotel management, while the Olissipo Lapa Palace, in Lisbon, was chosen as the “Best Classic Hotel”. Dunas Douradas Beach Club, in Almancil, was awarded “Best Golf Resort and Villas“, and the Bairro Alto Hotel, in Lisbon, received the title of “Best Historic Reference Hotel”.
The host of the ceremony, the Savoy Palace, in Funchal, was chosen “Best Luxury Hotel“. Its exclusive space, The Reserve, was distinguished as “Best Luxury Boutique Hotel”, while Saccharum, in Calheta, won the award for “Best Retreat”.
Globally, other winners included the Maldives, awarded “Best World Destination” and “Best Ecological Destination”, Peru, recognized as “Best Gastronomic Destination”, and Manila, in the Philippines, named “Best Urban Destination”.
