Atlético Mineiro was punished by the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) with the loss of six field goals, being forced to play behind closed doors or with a restricted presence of the public. The club also received fines totaling R$198,000.
The punishments were for the riot caused by the fans during the second game of the Copa do Brasil decision against Flamengo, at Arena MRV.
The decision of the 5th Disciplinary Commission of the STJD taken this Wednesday (27) was for a penalty of three games behind closed doors — two of which have already been completed —, and three with the presence permitted only of women, children, teenagers up to 16 years, the elderly and the PWD public.
“The decision can be appealed and the club will appeal,” Atlético Mineiro said in a statement.
According to the Sports Attorney’s Office, the club was denounced for “failing to take measures capable of preventing and repressing disorder in its sports venue, invasion of the playing field and throwing objects onto the field”.
The Prosecutor’s Office cited bomb throwing, field invasions and the use of a laser against Flamengo goalkeeper Augustin Rossi. The PCMG (Civil Police of Minas Gerais) opened an investigation to investigate the crime. Two other artifacts were thrown close to the player Gonzalo Plata, who scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory.
Nuremberg photographer Maria José was hit by a bomb and suffered fractures and ruptured tendons, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
On November 12, two days after the match, the STJD had already ordered the closure of Arena MRV, forcing the club to play its home games in another stadium and behind closed doors.
The black and white team from Minas Gerais sent the matches against Botafogo, in the 34th round, and against Juventude, in the 36th round, at Independência, in Belo Horizonte.
Atlético Mineiro reported that it has already identified some of the offenders, who will be punished by the club “severely”. According to management, 16 fans were taken away by the Military Police, 12 of which were detained due to inciting a riot, threats and racial insults.
After winning the first match 3-1, at Maracanã, the Red and Black team won again 1-0, at their opponent’s home, and became champions of the 2024 Copa do Brasil.
