At least 220 flights were canceled or delayed at airports across the country.
The strongest November snowstorm in the past half century hit the South Korean capital Seoul. On Wednesday, hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed due to the weather, and commuter traffic was also disrupted. TASR informs about it based on AP and Jonhap reports.
The South Korean Meteorological Agency reported that 20 centimeters of snow fell in and around the northern areas of Seoul, making the blizzard the heaviest in 52 years. In the blizzard of 1972, only 12 centimeters of snow fell in the capital. Meteorologists warn that the snowfall will continue in most areas until Thursday afternoon. In the north of the country, one person was killed and four others were injured in an accident involving five vehicles.
Snow blanketed much of the country, with central, eastern and southeastern regions of South Korea receiving around 10 to 23 centimeters of snow. Rescuers across the country remove fallen trees, signs and help people in danger.
At least 220 flights were canceled or delayed at airports across the country. Approximately 90 ferries did not sail to the sea, and hundreds of tourist routes were closed.
President Jun Sok-yol ordered the security and transportation ministries to mobilize available personnel and equipment to prevent traffic accidents and other snow-related incidents.
