Ursula von der Leyen reappointed as president of the European Commission

Ursula von der Leyen received approval in July to form the team for the next five years

The current president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was reappointed for a second term after winning 370 votes in favor and 282 against, while 36 MEPs abstained.

MEPs-elect to the European Parliament elected the College of Commissioners on Wednesday morning, following a debate with Ursula von der Leyen about her new team and the program she had presented.

In recent weeks there have been intense negotiations between these three political forces represented in the hemicycles of Brussels and Strasbourg – which traditionally represent a coalition – over the seven pending names out of a total of 26, and to reach an agreement all parties needed to make concessions.

The next community executive is made up of 11 women among 27 names (40% women and 60% men), one of which is the commissioner appointed by Portugal and former Minister of Finance, Maria Luís Albuquerque, who will occupy the Services portfolio Finance and Savings and Investment Union.

In her mission letter addressed to Maria Luís Albuquerque, the leader of the community executive asked the Portuguese commissioner to use her experience in the public (after having been Minister of Finance and Secretary of State for the Treasury in the governments of Pedro Passos Coelho) and in the private (after going through companies such as the European fund manager Arrow Global and the global bank Morgan Stanley) to “unlock a substantial amount of investment” in the European Union.
