Winter is a difficult time for potted flowers. Less light, dry air and the risk of drafts can cause their growth to slow down and the leaves to lose their intense color. That’s when it pays to use natural fertilizers, which will strengthen the plants and supply them with the necessary nutrients. One such homemade food is avocado peels – they can be used in two ways.
Winter challenges for green plants
In autumn and winter, internal conditions change significantly, which also affects the condition of potted plants. Less sunlight reduces the process of photosynthesis. Running radiators are a source of dry air, which can also weaken flowers and increase the risk of their yellowing and wilting. Lower temperatures near the windows expose them to thermal stress.
In such conditions, plants have a limited ability to absorb nutrients from the soil. Therefore, winter fertilizing with natural methods is the perfect solution to problems in home flower growing.
Avocado peels as fertilizer – a wealth of nutrients
Many potted plant lovers are probably familiar with banana peel based nutrients. It’s time to go a step further and learn about another clever way of using kitchen scraps in the care of flowers in the apartment. Avocado peels, which usually end up in the waste, contain many components necessary for the proper development of plants.
- Potassium – improves the ability of flowers to store water, which becomes crucial during the heating season. The mineral also promotes healthy leaf growth.
- Phosphorus – is an essential component for root development and flowering.
- Magnesium – responsible for intense greenness and supports the process of photosynthesis.
- Calcium – improves soil structure and facilitates the absorption of other minerals.
Thanks to this set, the fertilizer from avocado peels works in several directions and strengthens both the root system and the above-ground part of the plants.
How to make liquid fertilizer from avocado peels? Guide
The first variant of preparing homemade fertilizer is simple and requires minimal effort. Collect the skins from two pieces of avocado. Do not forget to clean them thoroughly from all the remains of the pulp. Cut them into small pieces, put them in a glass and pour 1.5 liters of water. Close the container, shake gently and set aside for three days in a shaded place. After this time, strain and use once every two to three weeks to water the plants.
Nutrients remain in the soil for a long time
You can go in a slightly different but equally effective direction. If you want to spend less time caring for your plants, make fertilizer from dried avocado peels. Dry the peels from two fruits in the oven at a low temperature – 50°C. When they cool down, break them into small pieces or grind them into a powder in a blender. Mix the fertilizer prepared in this way with the top layer of slightly moist soil in the pot. Nutrients will be released gradually. Just repeat this trick once a month.
The effects will surprise you
Flowering plants like orchids and African violets will appreciate this type of fertilizer. Nutrients support the development of flower buds. The following plants also respond very well to home and universal preparation:
- shoulder blades,
- ficuses,
- anthurium,
- ferns,
- monstery.
Regular use strengthens the root system and increases the plant’s resistance to drying out. You will notice faster growth, more beautifully colored leaves and larger flowers. At the same time, you will reduce the amount of waste at home by practical use.
