The former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) hopes to return to power. To achieve this objective, it relies on the support of the president-elect in the United States, the ally Donald Trumpwhich, he believes, will be able to help him through economic sanctions imposed against the president’s government Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Banned from running for public office until 2030 and facing criminal charges for allegedly plotting a coup d’état, Bolsonaro said, in an interview with The Wall Street Journalwho sees Trump’s election as a “game changer” for his future and for right-wing politicians in Latin America.
Leftists recently won presidential elections in Mexico and Uruguay and govern most of the large Latin countries. “Trump is back, and it’s a sign that we will be back too,” said Bolsonaro.

Flanked by two allied congressmen in a heavily guarded PL office covered with photos of recent rallies in Brasília (DF), Bolsonaro said he and his son, congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP)have been in close contact with the new US administration since the November 5 election. “I stayed up all night rooting for ‘Laranjão’”, he reported.
“It’s time for MAAGA – Make All Americas Great Again”, he also said, in an allusion to Trump’s campaign motto (MAGA – Make America Great Again) and proudly displaying a book published last year that Trump gave him with the inscription “ Jair – You are great” (“you are great”).
Bolsonaro plans to register his candidacy before the 2026 vote despite the ban, banking on Trump’s pressure on Brazilian judges to delay enforcement of the 2023 ruling long enough to run in the presidential election. “As long as the electoral court does not reject my registration, it is valid,” he said. “They can just delay as long as possible…until the election is over.”

Asked about the nature of possible US sanctions under Trump, Bolsonaro cited Washington’s oil sanctions on Venezuela. “Trump has also been very concerned about Venezuela and has discussed with me ways in which we can return it to democracy,” Bolsonaro said.
The Lula government refused to comment on the former president’s statements.
A spokesperson for Trump’s new administration did not respond to a request for comment.

A representative of the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, also declined to comment.
