Investigation in progress

This content is about a fact that is still being investigated by the editorial team. We will have more information soon.

The lawyer of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Paulo Cunha Bueno, contested this Friday (29) the result of the Federal Police investigation that indicated him as the mastermind of the alleged coup d’état plan that led to the indictment of him and others 36 people, including military personnel, former ministers and allies.

Cunha Bueno says that some of the links made to him regarding plans such as the assassination of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), among other episodes, are unrelated to him. For the lawyer, what is happening is the construction of a narrative based on excerpts of conversations and not in their entirety, from what was collected from those investigated.

“Not only is it possible [que ele não sabia o que estava acontecendo ao seu redor]as much of what is attributed to him in this report was in fact not known to him. We have episodes there that are completely distant and unrelated to him”, said the lawyer in an interview with GloboNews.

Paulo Cunha Bueno cites, among the cases, the alleged “Green and Yellow Dagger” plan found on the HD of General Mario Fernandes, then executive secretary of the General Secretariat of the Presidency. According to him, it is “scary planning for an operation that we would not even see in Venezuela” – in addition to the “2022 World Cup”, involving all the planning.

“The complete view of everything that was said, everything that was discussed, we have not had until today”, he pointed out.

According to what was extracted from the testimony of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, the then president would have come under pressure from several allies after being defeated in the 2022 election to take some action.

However, says Cunha Bueno, he never spoke of a coup. And yes only in judicial measures, including PL’s representation to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) questioning the health – the quality – of electronic voting machines manufactured until 2020. Bolsonaro cited this measure in a recent interview, which would not have been accepted by the Court electoral.

The lawyer contested the statements made by the then Army and Air Force generals who were against the alleged coup d’état, saying that “there was never any coup movement involved”.

“It would have been a discussion about the application of the state of defense […] which has a provision in the Constitution for specific situations and with a rite that does not give the president this power”, he clarified, remembering that, to do this, it is necessary to convene the Defense and Republic councils and also submit to Congress for approval by an absolute majority. to be decreed.

Cunha Bueno also pointed out that, if the state of defense was discussed in any of Bolsonaro’s conversations with the commanders of the Armed Forces, it was discarded.

He further questioned that some of those indicted were not even heard by the Federal Police, such as General Mario Fernandes himself – who, according to the authority, would have taken the plan to the former president for analysis at the Palácio da Alvorada – and Colonel Marcelo Costa Câmara, another former presidential aide-de-camp.

“The president thinks this plan is crazy. He says ‘I would never participate in something like that. It does not have [plano de golpe] because it doesn’t exist’”, highlighted the lawyer.
