The architect Carolina Guaycuru41, spoke to CNN about her husband’s health status Angeli68. The cartoonist was diagnosed with aphasiaa neurodegenerative disease that affects oral and written communication.
“Angeli is fine,” said Guaycuru. “He has a neurological condition, so this good has to be understood in a different way. He now has a way of living, of expressing himself, of understanding the complexity of life that is different, that is his own. And for us, who are his friends and the people who love him, it is up to us to find ways so that his way meets ours.”
“It fits [aos amigos e familiares] find moments of happiness and make them last so that this new life is the best possible. It’s a new life, it’s a different life, but we’re trying to make this life a very happy one”, he explained.
Guaycuru spoke with the CNN about the event “”, in which he participated in the organization. The event, held at Sound Image Museum (MIS) this Saturday (30), is to celebrate 40 years since the creation of one of Angeli’s best-known characters.
The cartoonist was one of the most important in the country during the 1980s and his impact on the printing industry continues today. “During his 50-year career, Angeli illustrated Brazil”, explained Carolina Guaycuru. “His work accompanied Brazilian political and cultural transformations.”
“In addition to being a graphic artist who achieved mastery, he was one of the greatest chroniclers of our times,” he continued. “He drew the insides of the human being. Through criticism, he sought change, he sought the punch in the stomach, the discomfort and the challenge. And nothing more punk than that. I believe that his work and the counterculture movement are completely inseparable.”
In addition to the striking characters that the cartoonist created for the magazine Chiclete com Banana, Angeli was also a cartoonist for the newspaper Folha de São Paulo. After a 51-year career, he arrived in April 2022. The decision was motivated by the diagnosis of aphasia.
Previously, Angeli even addressed the difficulty he encountered in drawing in his account during the filming of the film “Bob Cuspe – We Don’t Like People” (2021). The animation based on Angeli’s iconic punk character shows both creator and creature on an adventure, while the cartoonist gives details of his personal life.
