When and how did Atlético win the Libertadores?
Atlético won the Libertadores in 2013, their first title in the continental competition. The team had several stars in its squad, including midfielder Ronaldinho Gaúcho, a great highlight of the team.
In the first phase, Galo was in Group C, along with São Paulo, Arsenal de Sarandí-ARG and The Strongest-BOL. He finished at the top of the group, with 15 points won.
In the round of 16, they faced São Paulo and won both games. In the first leg, they won 2-1 at Morumbis. On the way back, in a duel played at Independência, another victory, this time by 4 to 1.
The quarterfinals were played against Tijuana, from Mexico. In the first match, a 2-2 draw. In the return match, 1-1 at Independência, with a miracle from Victor, defending a penalty in stoppage time, qualified Galo to the semi-finals. It is worth remembering that at that time the Libertadores had an away goal as a tiebreaker.
In the semi-final, the opponent was Newell’s Old Boys, from Argentina. In the first leg, in Rosário, they lost 2-0. However, in the second duel, Galo returned the score, which led to penalties: Atlético won 3-2.
The big decision was against Olimpia, from Paraguay. In the first leg, Galo lost 2-0, which complicated the situation in the second leg. However, with the motto “I believe” from the Minas Gerais fans, the team returned the score and took the decision to penalties. On penalties, Atlético won 4-3.
