In a statement, Porto, Nosso Movimento says that the decision was taken on Friday at a general meeting attended by more than 150 members.
Porto, Nosso Movimento, through which the current president of that municipality, Rui Moreira, who is serving his last term, was elected, will present a candidate for the 2025 municipal elections, this civic association announced this Saturday.
In a statement, he said that the decision was taken on Friday at a general meeting attended by more than 150 members.
The independent movement wants to present a project for the city and establish conversations with “all those who see themselves in a proposal for independent management of the city”.
The recommendation, which Lusa had access to today, reads that the creation of this civic association aimed to support Rui Moreira’s independent movement and “serve as his political shield”, understanding that its objective does not end at the end of this mandate .
“The independent citizens’ movement led by Rui Moreira and his team has transformed Porto in the last 11 years, realizing ambitions long desired by Porto residents, taking the city to a new level of development and recognition”, he highlighted.
The letter also highlighted that the “free, independent and unfettered character of municipal management was decisive for the results achieved”.
Noting that next year’s local elections are “very important” for the future of the city, the independent movement claims to have the “necessary experience and competence to ensure that this path of improvement and progress continues over time”.
In September last year and on the sidelines of the civic association’s commemorative dinner, the mayor of Porto said he believed that the independent movement “can continue to make a difference” in the city after his departure.
The vice-president of the Porto City Council, Filipe Araújo, took office in January 2023 as president of the civic association “Porto, O Nosso Movimento”, succeeding Francisco Ramos, with the aim of continuing the policies of the municipal executive led by Rui Moreira.
