When cleaning, the slats are not always given enough attention. They are elements that are often overlooked, although they collect dirt very easily. It even happens that molds appear on them, which are dangerous for our health. How to fight her? What can be done to reduce dust on the baseboards? Find out what home remedies will keep them in perfect condition.

Cleaning the plinth

The moldings cover the unsightly spaces between the wall and the floor, making the interior look elegant and refined. They are not only practical, but also striking, because thanks to different materials and surface treatments, they form an interesting decoration. However, this only applies if we do not forget to clean the plinths regularly. When cleaning, we often skip them and concentrate on wiping the furniture or vacuuming the floors. This is a mistake, because not only dust, but even mold can accumulate on the slats.

Why do skirting boards get dirty easily? They are low and stick out from the wall, so any dirt quickly settles on them: dust, pet hair and other particles. Mold occurs on them in rooms with high humidity and poor ventilation. Mold is most likely to appear on slats located near a cold wall that is in contact with warm air. Moisture condenses on them, which creates ideal conditions for mold growth.

How to clean baseboards – ways to deal with dust and mold

Cleaning skirting boards not only gives the interior a clean and neat appearance, but above all prevents the accumulation of mites, bacteria and mold spores in our homes, which are harmful to health. Light dirt should be removed at least once a week. However, regular vacuuming is often not enough. How do you clean skirting boards? Here are the best home remedies for dust and mold:

  • Water and vinegar – mix these ingredients in a 1:1 ratio. Lightly moisten a cloth with the mixture and wipe the plinths. This will get rid of greasy stains, dust and mold traces;
  • Baking soda paste – add enough water to the baking soda to make a thick paste. Use a soft brush to apply it to the slats and then remove the excess paste with a damp cloth. This method works best on white slats;
  • Liquid soap – add 2-3 tablespoons of liquid soap to 500 ml of lukewarm water. Wet a cloth, squeeze out the excess solution and wipe the slats;
  • Towel from the dryer – wipe the plinths with it. It not only removes dirt from the surface, but also covers it with a layer that protects it from dust settling. In addition, it will spread a pleasant aroma around;
  • Mix with fabric softener – add 1 capful of your favorite fabric softener to 1 liter of water. Mix and then spread on the baseboards using a soft cloth. Such a liquid has an antistatic effect, ie it reduces the attraction of dust and dirt;
  • Concentrate with borax – pour 5 l of water into the bucket. Add 125g each of borax, baking soda and detergent. This solution is concentrated, so we have to dilute it in a ratio of 1:10 (1 part liquid to 10 parts water). We use it to clean moldy skirting boards.

Even if we got rid of the mold from the slats thanks to the above methods, we have to eliminate the cause of its formation. Ensure effective ventilation and try to reduce indoor humidity. If you are unable to get rid of the mold, use the services of a professional wall decontamination company.
