Storm Bora leaves a scene of destruction on the island of Rhodes, Greece

Torrential rain flooded homes, businesses and roads on the popular Greek tourist island of Rhodes this Sunday (1st). Authorities temporarily banned the use of vehicles because of the damage caused by the second day of Storm Bora.

The Greek fire department said it received more than 650 calls to pump water from flooded buildings on the island of Rhodes and evacuated 80 people to safety.

Cars were piled up in the flooded streets of Rhodes, with residents trying to remove mud from their flooded properties.

“The situation is tragic, some have lost their homes, others have fled, our cars are in terrible condition,” said Sofia Kanelli, a resident of Ialysos, the hardest hit town on the island.

Despite the damage, no injuries were reported.

On Saturday (30), a man died as a result of flash floods, which hit another Greek island in the north of the Aegean Sea.

Fire department spokesman Vassilis Varthakogiannis told Greek TV SKAI that the bad weather would continue on Monday (2).
