At the beginning of September, one of the most serious cases in the history of the Portuguese prison system occurred, with the escape of five prisoners from the Vale de Judeus Prison, in Alcoentre (Setúbal).

This Tuesday, a third fugitive was recaptured, but two continue to mount.

This escape led the Portuguese Ministry of Justice to move forward with the establishment of nine processestargeting the former director, the head of the guard and seven prison guards, a decision that resulted from the recommendations of the report prepared by the Audit and Inspection Service (SAI) of the General Directorate of Reinsertion and Prison Services (DGRSP).

In a note released in October, the Ministry of Justice also highlighted the opening of two autonomous surveys: one regarding the prison commissioner, due to “the lack of implementation of a security measure and a situation of prolonged absenteeism”; and another to the Security Services Directorate “to assess its functioning and capacity to respond to situations of this nature”.

A certificate was also issued to the competent authorities to determine disciplinary responsibilities in relation to GNR military personnel about “the conditions under which images of events in the Vale de Judeus prison were transferred, without authorization, to the media.
