The first female military enlistment in the country’s history begins on January 1st of next year. Young people who turn 18 in 2025 will be able to enlist voluntarily until June 30th of the same year.
The initiative that allowed women to enter was announced by the Lula (PT) government in . Around 1,500 vacancies will be offered in 28 municipalities in 13 states, in addition to the Federal District.
Candidates will be able to enlist online or in person at a Military Service Board.
Among the documents requested are a birth certificate or proof of naturalization, proof of residence, official document with photo, such as identification or work card.
The recruitment process will be carried out in stages: enlistment, general selection, complementary selection, designation/distribution and incorporation.
Candidates will undergo a selection process that includes an interview, health inspection (clinical and laboratory exams) and physical tests. They will be able to choose the Force they wish to incorporate, however, the availability of vacancies, the aptitude of the candidate and the specificity required by the Navy, Army and Air Force will be taken into account.
Once incorporated, women will occupy the rank of soldier, being called sailor-recruit in the Navy, and will have the same rights and duties as men.
The incorporation could take place in the 1st half of 2026 (from March 2nd to 6th) or in the second half of 2026 (from August 3rd to 7th). Military service will last 12 months, and may be extended for up to eight years, according to decree No. 12,154 of 2024.
The Ministry of Defense intends to progressively increase the number of women recruited for the Women’s Initial Military Service, reaching a rate of 20% of vacancies. Today, the Armed Forces have 37 thousand women, around 10% of all personnel.
The female presence in the Forces is mainly in the areas of health, teaching and logistics or they have access to the combat area through specific public competitions in educational establishments, such as the Naval College, the Navy, the Army Cadet Preparatory School and the Escola Preparatory Air Cadets, Air Force.
