A potential peace in Ukraine can be secured in the event of the deployment of an armed unit that will have up to 150,000 members. This was stated by the Austrian expert Markus Reisner, according to TASR, according to the Saturday report of the DPA agency.

Colonel Reisner of the Austrian army told Welt am Sonntag newspaper in an article published on Saturday that “at least 100,000 to 150,000 soldiers” will be needed for a successful peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. Subsequently, this number may decrease over time, he added. “However, especially at the beginning of such a mission, a complex logistical operation is needed, for example, as a carefully executed operation to remove mines along the borders,” Reisner added.

As he pointed out, if the units are of a smaller scale, the probability of violating the terms of the ceasefire is much higher. Reisner himself served in both Afghanistan and Iraq and is considered an international military expertwrites DPA.

Several international bodies are currently discussing a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, which was indicated by the newly elected Republican US President Donald Trump. According to Reisner, the Europeans alone will not be able to secure a possible demilitarized zone in Ukraine. “The largest European countries, namely Germany, France, Great Britain and Italy, would initially not be able to deploy more than 25,000 to 50,000 troops,” Reisner said, adding that other EU countries would also participate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will be interested in acquiring “as many countries as possible from the so-called global south, i.e. countries like India and Bangladesh, but also from the African continent,” concluded Reisner.
