O Brazil is experiencing a significant change in its epidemiological profile, with the emerging as the main cause of death in several locations, surpassing cardiovascular diseases. A recent study published in the journal The Lancet – Regional Health Americas indicates that, in 2000, only 7% of municipalities registered cancer as the main cause of death, while in 2019 this percentage increased to 13%. The research, carried out by academics from the University of California and Unifesp, analyzed data from 5.57 thousand Brazilian municipalities between the years 2000 and 2019. The results showed that mortality from cardiovascular diseases decreased in 25 of the 27 units of the federation, while while the cancer death rate increased in 15 states.
Among the factors that contributed to this change, the reduction in smoking stands out, driven by effective public policies, which had a positive impact on reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases. However, the drop in cancer mortality rates may be a longer process, due to the latent nature of the disease. Doctor Anelisa Coutinho highlights that approximately one third of cancer cases can be prevented through lifestyle changes, such as adopting a balanced diet and regularly practicing physical activities. Obesity, which has jumped from 10% to 20% among the Brazilian population since 2000, represents a growing concern in this context.
In response to this situation, the National Cancer Prevention and Control Policy was recently approved, which aims to reduce the incidence of the disease and improve access to treatment. However, implementing specific strategies for different types of cancer faces challenges, especially due to the financial limitations of the healthcare system. Experts warn that this epidemiological transition is a natural phenomenon, but it demands constant attention for both cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
