At least five men, including two security guards, were shot dead in an area of migrant camps in northern France on Saturday afternoon.

The incident unfolded near Loon Plage, near Dunkirk, where small boats bound for Britain regularly depart, when a car drove into one of the refugee camps and the driver opened fire.

Police in northern France said a man handed himself over to gendarmerie in Ghyvelde, claiming he killed five people in the Dunkirk area, four in the camp and another in Wormhout.

The perpetrator is a 22-year-old

Authorities confirmed that two security guards and two migrants were killed near Dunkirk on Saturday, while a fifth person was killed about five kilometers away.

The circumstances of the murders are currently unknown. A judicial investigation has been launched, the prefecture told AFP.

According to the refugee NGO Care4Calais, refugees have been camping in the area for years. “They are Kurdish or Afghan and mainly many families with small children,” the charity says.
