The Brazilian team had a change in its list for the 2026 World Cup. After right-back Wesley was cut due to a muscle injury, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced this Sunday (7) the call-up of midfielder Éderson, who plays for Atalanta, in Italy.
At 26 years old, the midfielder joins the group led by Carlo Ancelotti in the United States and becomes part of the squad that will seek a sixth world championship. The call-up represents another opportunity for the player, who had already been observed by the Seleção’s technical committee.
Born in Campo Grande (MS), Éderson built his career in Brazilian football before standing out in Europe. Revealed by the youth teams of Desportivo Brasil, the midfielder played for Cruzeiro, Corinthians and Fortaleza. It was precisely at the Ceará club that he gained national recognition, attracting the attention of the European market.
In 2022, he transferred to Salernitana, in Italy. A few months later, his consistent performance in the Italian Championship aroused the interest of Atalanta, a team for which he established himself as one of the main midfielders in Serie A. Known for his intensity in marking, his ability to carry the ball and attack, Éderson became an important player for the Italian club in recent seasons.
For the main Brazilian team, the midfielder is still looking for greater success. He was called up for the first time in 2024 and has played three games with the yellow shirt, accumulating 107 minutes on the field. Although he appeared on the first list released in June 2025, he did not play under the command of the Italian coach.
The opportunity arose after Wesley’s death. The full-back suffered an injury to the adductor muscle in his left thigh during Brazil’s victory over Egypt, in a friendly to prepare for the World Cup. The problem was confirmed after tests carried out by .
The player felt pain in the first half of the match. After finishing, he put his hand on his left leg and had to be replaced by Danilo. On the bench, Wesley went and received support from his teammates.
The CBF did not announce a deadline for the athlete’s recovery, who was hoping to compete in his first World Cup. With the change, Éderson joins the Brazilian group on the eve of their debut in the tournament.
