Last Saturday night, the skies of Braga were illuminated by an impressive meteor, recorded at 11:27 pm by the AMS211 station of the local Astronomical Observatory. The phenomenon coincided with the peak of the famous Geminid star shower, provided by the object 3200 Phaeton, an asteroid with the characteristics of a “rocky comet”.

According to the Planetarium – Casa da Ciência de Braga, the Geminids stand out for being slower meteors, with an observation period that occurs every year in December, reaching the peak generally between the 13th and 14th. exception, providing a unique natural spectacle.

The intensity of the Geminid star shower has been increasing, with recent records of 120 to 160 meteors per hour under bright and dark conditions. Observers in Braga had the opportunity to witness this celestial phenomenon at its peak, reinforcing the charm and importance of December nights for astronomy lovers.
