The general had a correct military career. He reached four-star general and began to lose his way in 2018, when he was thrust into the role of intervenor in public security.
In the first few days, another general went to inspect a battalion barracks and the guard who received him did not salute him. Nobody suspected that the . In Planalto, it was said that it had been “a masterstroke”. Okay, samba school masterstroke.
There were strange days of revival of spirit in the barracks and the former captain was elected president of the Republic. He filled the administration with friendly generals, colonels and officers. And there was Braga Netto. He became head of and candidate for vice president on Bolsonaro’s eventual re-election ticket.
In this new incarnation, there was little of the officer who worked in the barracks. He sent messages that, if the vote was not printed, there would be no election. There was, and he lost. There were inappropriate arrangements with the head of the command staff, the lieutenant colonel. He got involved in social networks, activating hatred and gossip. Finally, according to Mauro Cid, he handed over money “from agricultural people” for what he claims was an attempted coup to be carried out in December 2022.
Since the first months of his government, former captain Bolsonaro dreamed of an apocalypse that would wake up the knights of the coup. He did this publicly.
Of the money raised by Braga Netto, only the fate of a portion is known. On December 7, 2022, Major Rafael de Oliveira bought a 12 for R$2,500 and placed it in his wife’s name. I could have bought a cheaper device because, in theory, it would only serve to campaign the minister.
Bolsonaro never went beyond captain. He governed in violation of elementary rules of the military. He gave his aide-de-camp a few months of fame. Error. There were three disastrous governments that gave the spotlight to some of these officers: Costa e Silva and João Figueiredo. The current Army commander, Tomás Paiva, was an aide-de-camp and no one noticed.
Each Army weapon has its patron. The palatial men would have theirs. It is General Argemiro de Assis Brasil, who set up Goulart’s military device. He ended up leaving the deposed president in a ravine in the Pampa of Rio Grande do Sul, to present himself to the new government.
The 2022/23 coup group certainly thought they could repeat the feat of General Jayme Portella, head of the Casa Militar de Costa e Silva. In 1968, he resolved one side of the crisis of Institutional Act No. 5. A year later, he created a Military Junta and became the virtual owner of the Republic for a few weeks. General Emilio Médici was elected and his colleague Orlando Geisel went to the Ministry of the Army. Portella found himself defenestrated to the Military Region of , commanding a lot of staff and few troops. He ended his career without winning the fourth star.
Braga Netto managed to be a candidate for vice on a defeated ticket. As a palace general, he thought he was in charge. He is imprisoned in a troop unit that he commanded when he was an officer who did not get involved in politics or the palace.
