Lula, 79, underwent emergency surgery last week to drain a hematoma in his skull, the result of a domestic accident in October.
The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT)said this Friday (20) that he believes that the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has “all the conditions to be competitive” in 2026 to seek re-election, “paying attention to what needs to be done in the country”.
Haddad also stated that he does not see himself as a presidential candidate in 2026.
“When there was the exchange rate crisis in 1999, the exchange rate soared. It was such a blow. [Armínio] Fraga had to keep the interest rate at 45% to hold the exchange rate. If it weren’t for the blackout in 2001, the government would have been very competitive in 2002. In fact, it arrived, went to the second round and contested the election”, recalled Haddad, citing the government of former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB). In 2002, the candidate supported by FHC was José Serra (PSDB), defeated by Lula.
Lula, 79, underwent emergency surgery last week to drain a bruise on his skull, the result of a domestic accident in October, when he fell in the bathroom of the Palácio da Alvorada and hit his head.
The episode involving Lula’s health generated uncertainty about the presidential succession in 2026, when, at 81 years of age, he will be able to seek re-election and seek a fourth term as President.
