A police chase on Saturday in the city of Killeen, Texas, ended with a suspect shot dead by police after he broke into a JC Penney store with a pickup truck at high speed and continued running over people inside a shopping center. Authorities reported that five people were injured, with no details yet on their condition.
According to TV stations such as ABC ea Fox Newsthe incident began around 5 pm, when police were alerted to a driver of a black pickup truck, who was driving erratically on Interstate 14, in Belton, about 30 kilometers from Killeen.
The driver then left the road and entered the shopping center parking lot. He then broke into a JC Penney store and continued for dozens of meters inside the mall, until he was shot dead by police officers in pursuit and by another officer who was in the shopping center.
A video shared by X by a witness shows the moment the pickup truck invades the store and people leaving in despair. Soon after, several gunshots are heard coming from inside the mall.
At a press conference Saturday night, Sergeant Bryan Washko of the Texas Department of Public Safety said the driver was “actively running over people.” The injured are between 6 and 75 years old, the police officer said.
Emergency medical services transported four victims from the mall to area hospitals and another went to another medical facility on his own.
