The GNR began Operation Christmas and New Year 2024/2025 on December 18, which will last until January 2, 2025. This operation aims to reinforce citizens’ sense of security, through prevention (proximity) and patrolling, in places with the greatest influx of people, focusing on Operation “Safe Commerce”.
According to the GNR statement, inspection and road safety actions will be carried out in parallel, during the busy Christmas and New Year periods, on roads with the highest traffic flow, in order to ensure that festivities and travel take place safely, in the entire national territory.
As part of the operation, the GNR directs patrolling to places of festivities and gatherings of people, residential, entertainment, commercial and industrial areas, with the aim of guaranteeing public safety and tranquility, preventing infractions, dissuading and combating crime, including road patrolling on the most critical roads, to ensure high levels of public safety.
Especially during the Christmas and New Year periods, and as in previous years, an increase in the movement of people throughout the National Territory is expected, which is reflected in a large increase in road traffic, and consequently, in the increase in practices associated with risky behavior and excesses on the part of some drivers.
In Operation Christmas and New Year 2024/2025, the GNR intends to achieve two major objectives:
“The reduction in general crime, with an emphasis on preventing criminal offenses, through awareness-raising and patrolling actions and the reinforcement of proximity policing among the most vulnerable people;
The reduction in road accidents, through inspection actions aimed at places with the highest traffic flow, especially during the Christmas and New Year periods”, says the statement.
