A team of forensic scientists managed to reconstruct the face of Saint Nicholas in 3D and, amazingly, he has features very similar to the figure of Santa Claus!
The saint, who inspired Bom Velhinho, has rosy cheeks, a voluminous beard and a very welcoming face. Remind you of someone? Saint Nicholas of Myra lived in Asia Minor (present-day Türkiye) between the 3rd and 4th centuries.
The reconstruction used advanced forensic analysis and computed tomography techniques. Furthermore, the specialist combined anatomical and historical data. The result was impressive and matches the descriptions made of the Saint in poems and illustrations from the 19th century.
How it was made
The work was led by Cícero Moraes, a specialist in facial reconstructions.
As a basis, the researcher used the skull attributed to the saint. In the process, a series of scientific methods were employed.
The CT scan captured every detail of the skull. Forensic analysis helped determine facial features.
Lastly, historical sources were used to adjust traits such as skin color, hair, and beard.
Similarity is impressive
At the end of the process, the similarity was impressive.
When they were finished, the scientists had a face that reflected the appearance of a robust man, approximately 70 years old.
The appearance recalled classic descriptions of Santa Claus. Pink cheeks, a gentle air and a wide face are present in the digital image generated by Cícero.
Healthy man
Furthermore, it revealed a very curious detail about the bones of Saint Nicholas.
They had a mineral density higher than that measured for their age, which indicates very robust health.
Who was Saint Nicholas?
Saint Nicholas was born in the city of Patara, in the Roman Empire, between the years 250 and 270, and died around 335 to 370.
The man stood out for his kindness, especially for helping the poor and children.
The generosity of Saint Nicholas gave rise to the figure of Santa Claus, whose gift-giving tradition began with the Dutch folk hero Sinterklaas.
