Brazilian plane crashes in Kazakhstan with 67 on board; 42 confirmed deaths

A plane with 67 people on board crashed this Wednesday morning (25), in Aktau, Kazakhstan, leaving 42 dead and 25 survivors so far. The aircraft, registration number J2-8243, was manufactured in Brazil. The Ministry of Health, in turn, states that there are 28 survivors.

More than 50 rescuers worked at the scene of the accident to extinguish the fire and assist survivors. The number of people on board was confirmed by the airline through a statement published on Instagram. Among them were 37 citizens of Azerbaijan, six from Kazakhstan, three from Kyrgyzstan and 16 Russians, according to information from the Kazakh Ministry of Transport.

Azerbaijan Airlines claims that “there were no children among the passengers”. The company’s statement also says that survivors are receiving initial medical assistance” and that “contacts are being established with Kazakh authorities”, in addition to “necessary operational support by Kazakh emergency rescue agencies (which are) on site”.

Videos circulating on social media show the plane turning in the air with its landing gear open as it loses altitude. The aircraft collides with the ground on its belly and then an explosion is seen.

In a first statement, also published on Instagram, Azerbaijan Airlines states that the aircraft “made an emergency landing approximately 3 km from the city of Aktau”.

The Embraer 190 model has the capacity to carry 96 to 114 people, including passengers and crew.
