PRF removes agents who shot young man and PF opens investigation

Juliana Rangel was shot in the head during an action in Baixada Fluminense; victim was going with his family to spend Christmas at a relative’s house

A (Federal Police) an inquiry this Wednesday (25th December 2024) to investigate the actions of agents of the (Federal Highway Police) in an action in Baixada Fluminense, in Rio de Janeiro. On that occasion, 26-year-old Juliana Leite Rangel was shot in the head by the police. Those involved were preventively removed.

The victim was going with his family of 5 to spend Christmas at a relatives’ house in Itaipu, Niterói, metropolitan region of Rio, when the car was hit by several shots fired by PRF agents, near Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense, on Tuesday night (Dec 24, 2024).

The incident occurred around 9pm. The young woman was taken to the Adão Pereira Nunes Municipal Hospital, in Caxias, and needed to be intubated, underwent surgery and her condition is considered very serious.

Juliana’s father, Alexandre da Silva Rangel, 53 years old, was also admitted to the health unit with a gunshot wound to his left hand.

He was evaluated by the hospital’s general surgery and orthopedics unit, with no injuries or fractures found, just a small cut, and was discharged on Tuesday night (Dec 24).

Alexandre’s car with several gunshot marks and that of the PRF team were towed to the courtyard of the federal police station, in Nova Iguaçu, where the examination and testimony of the police officers and the victims who were in the car, all from the same family, will be carried out. .

Through a note, the PRF informed that “the General Inspectorate of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), in Brasília, ordered the opening of an internal procedure to investigate the facts related to the incident on Tuesday night, on BR-040, Rodovia Washington Luís, in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense. The agents involved were preventively removed from all operational activities.”.

The PRF also said that it deeply regrets the episode. As determined by the General Directorate, the General Coordination of Human Rights monitors the situation and provides assistance to the family of young Juliana Leite Rangel.

The note also says that the PRF collaborates with the Federal Police, responsible for the investigation, in providing information to assist in the investigation of the case.
