Mauterndorf/Tamsweg – A winter sports athlete was hit and killed by an avalanche in Mauterndorf im Lungau on Wednesday. According to mountain rescue, the local off-piste skier was off-piste in the Speiereck summit area (2,411 meters above sea level) in the Radstädter Tauern at midday when he triggered a snow slab at 11:25 a.m. Four mountain rescuers from Mauterndorf who happened to be present were able to quickly locate and dig out the 70-year-old man. Any help came too late for him.
