POST 5 OF 5
The death of altar boy Gabriel Fernando dos Santos Lima, aged 17, shocked the Catholic community of Londrina, in the North of Paraná. The city’s archdiocese released a statement this Thursday (26), mourning the teenager’s death.
In the note, the Communication Ministry and the Youth Sector of the Archdiocese of Londrina informed that Gabriel was active in the community as a photographer and participated in the youth group at Paróquia São José, in the district of Irerê. Furthermore, he was a catechist and altar boy in that same community.
“A young man who is present and generous in the community, with healthy friendships with everyone and a great testimony of joy for his family […] The agents of the Pastoral of Communication and the groups of adolescents and young people of the archdiocese unite in prayer for the eternal rest of Gabriel who planted in the parish community and in the archdiocese a strong testimony and the seeds of joy, generosity and fidelity to the Church. And we pray that the Holy Family of Nazareth intercedes, comforts and consoles the hearts of their family members,” said the note.
Police investigate whether altar boy was killed by mistake
This Thursday (26), delegate João Reis, who is investigating the case, pointed out that one of the lines of investigation is that the teenager was and that the real target was the neighbor who lived at the back of the family house.
“We checked to see if he had an issue with a girlfriend, if he had any passionate issues, but that possibility is very remote,” explained the delegate.
According to investigations, the neighbor who lived in the house behind Gabriel’s room had police records and was involved in drug trafficking. Between the altar boy’s room, where the crime was recorded, and the neighbor’s house, there is no wall separating the two residences.
“Gabriel worked, was an altar boy at church, studied, that is, he was not involved with drugs, I checked to verify, he was not. The neighbor in the back has a very crooked and tumultuous life. Some people even wanted to kill him. [o vizinho] in Tamarana, some disagreements in Londrina, that’s why he would be here in Irerê, to try to take refuge a little, to escape the confusion”, highlighted delegate Reis. “The main line of investigation is that the target is not Gabriel,” he said.
Gabriel was sleeping in his room, in the family home, when the window of the residence was opened and the suspect shot the teenager several times. The altar boy was rescued and taken to the hospital, but he did not survive.
The family said that Gabriel was an altar boy, a photographer at the institution and a catechist.
