Several flights were delayed this Thursday, on the fifth and final day of the strike at the handling company Menzies (formerly Groundforce), a union source told Lusa, who does not rule out further strikes at the beginning of next year.
Speaking to Lusa, Carlos Oliveira, from the direction of the Sindicato das Indústrias Metalúrgicas e Afins (SIMA), said that the strike had an impact on 23 flights in the morning, in addition to the 34 flight delays recorded or expected in the afternoon. and until the end of the day.
In accounting for the impact of the strike, for which he said he had no membership fees in relation to the adopted model (two-hour modules at the entrance and/or exit of shifts), the union leader also included a canceled flight during the day of this Thursday- fair .
In turn, an official source told Lusa that until 5pm, the strike had “no impact on the operation”.
Given the lack of response from Menzies to the demands, Carlos Oliveira told Lusa that the union intends to go to court with more actions against the company, warning however that workers will not simply wait for the courts’ decision, considering new forms of struggle, including resorting to strike.
Criticizing what he calls “pure and harsh arrogance” on the part of the company, the union leader highlighted that there are “a series of illegalities” over which they are considering taking legal action, joining the actions that have already been filed against the value of the remuneration minimum wage practiced (which is below the minimum wage), the requirement to pay for parking and the failure to pay for night hours in relation to the provisions of the company agreement.
“We will see what the courts will respond, but the fight does not stop there and we will have new strikes, perhaps as early as 2025”, he stated.
In turn, and after the strike on the 24th and 25th, workers at the Portway handling company will go back on strike on December 31st and January 1st, hoping for a turnout higher than the approximately 30% to 40% registered on that day. first period.
In addition to greater participation, Fernando Henriques, leader of the Aviation and Airport Workers Union (Sitava) told Lusa that they will also seek to avoid the “technique” of “mass assignment of workers for minimum services” carried out by the company during the Christmas.
To this end, he said, the unions will be the ones to designate minimum services during the strike period scheduled for the end of the year.
