Trump calls for suspension of law that threatens to ban TikTok in the US

Republican says he wants to “negotiate a solution”; the platform could be banned on January 19, 1 day before the presidential inauguration

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican), asked this Friday (Dec 27, 2024) that the North American Supreme Court suspend the law that threatens to ban TikTok in the country from January 19, 2025, 1 day before the presidential inauguration.

According to the petition presented to the Court, Trump requests more time for his government to “seek a negotiated resolution” in order to avoid blocking the platform. Here is it (PDF – 247 kB, in English).

“President Trump has the definitive negotiating expertise, the electoral mandate, and the political will to negotiate a solution that saves the platform while also addressing the national security concerns expressed by the administration — concerns that President Trump himself has acknowledged.”the document states.

The law, (Democratic) on April 24th, establishes that ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, sells the platform by January 19th, 2025 to a North American company. If the transaction is not carried out by the deadline, the social network will be banned.

The legislation was driven by suspicion among United States authorities that China was using the platform to access the data of Americans and monitor them.

On December 18, the US Supreme Court agreed to analyze an appeal filed by ByteDance against the law. The Court will assess whether the platform violated the . Oral arguments will begin to be heard on January 10, 2025.
