The , signed by Brazilian journalist Marina Dias, states that Lula seeks to establish a relationship “as equals for equals” with the Republican, without giving up political differences and the defense of Brazilian sovereignty.
The tension between the 2 governments intensified in 2025, when Trump adopted tariffs and sanctions against Brazil while pressing against the former president (PL), investigated for an attempted coup d’état. At the time, Lula accused the North American of interfering in the country’s internal affairs and violating Brazilian sovereignty.
Despite the recent history of friction, Lula adopted an agreement with Trump at the White House on May 7. According to the Brazilian president, ideological differences should not interfere in the institutional relationship between the 2 countries.
“My political differences with Trump do not interfere with my relationship with him as head of state. What I want is for him to treat Brazil with respect, understanding that I am the democratically elected president here”he stated.
After the meeting in Washington, tensions eased. Trump praised Lula’s intelligence and indicated interest in expanding trade exchanges between countries. The PT member, in turn, stated that the rapprochement could help attract investments from the United States to Brazil and strengthen respect for national sovereignty.
In an interview, Lula said that “Whoever lowers their head may not be able to raise it again. Brazil is very proud of what it is. We don’t have to bow down to anyone”.
The stance contrasts with the relationship maintained by Bolsonaro with Trump, marked by ideological alignment and public admiration for the Republican. Lula, however, stated that he does not intend to interfere in the relationship between the two.
“I would never ask Trump to dislike Bolsonaro. That’s his problem. I don’t need to make any effort to let him know that I’m better than Bolsonaro. He already knows that”he declared.
