The British Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday that it will provide Ukrainian authorities, including the Prosecutor General’s Office, with 4.5 million pounds (about 5.4 million euros) to support Ukrainian documentation, investigation and prosecution of Russian war crimes. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

The British government has previously pledged £6.2 million to help prosecute war crimes. It gave most of the money to the Mass Crime Advisory Group, a joint initiative of the European Union, Britain and the United States.

In September 2022, UN investigators stated that they had recorded war crimes during the war in Ukraine. The commission of inquiry said it had seen evidence of executions, torture and sexual and gender-based violence.

The latest funding is in addition to a £225 million military aid package announced by British Defense Secretary John Healey during a visit to Kiev in December. The package includes unmanned aircraft, vessels and air defense systems.

The loan will come from Russian assets

British MPs also voted to provide another loan to Ukraine in the amount of 2.26 billion pounds, which will be repaid from profits from Russian assets.

“During 2024, the world was inspired by the unbreakable courage of the Ukrainian people. As we enter 2025, the UK’s commitment to strengthening support for Ukraine is unwavering,” Healey said. “From supplying state-of-the-art equipment to training tens of thousands of troops, we have shown that Britain stands with the Ukrainian people in the face of (President Vladimir’s) brutal and illegal invasion. Putin. Because the UK’s defense starts in Ukraine,” he said.

Healey added that Britain would support Kiev for as long as necessary “so that Ukrainians can defend themselves and restore their sovereignty, security and freedom”.

British Foreign Minister David Lammy also commented on the latest aid to Ukraine, who said that “the support of the United Kingdom will help Ukraine in pursuing justice for the victims and survivors of the victims of these crimes.”
