The phenomenon affected dozens of artisanal fishing vessels and businesses close to the Peruvian coast. It also caused riverside residents to flee the flooding of sidewalks and squares, according to images published in the Peruvian media and social networks.

In Peru, 91 ports, out of a total of 121, were closed until January 1, 2025, indicated the National Emergency Operations Center (Coen) in its account on the X network. According to the alert issued on Friday by this institution, the phenomenon began on December 25th and is expected to affect areas of the north, center and south coast of the country.

In Ecuador, the fire department in the city of Manta reported a death in the Barbasquillo region. The National Risk Management Secretariat ordered the preventive closure of beaches in this city, in southwestern Ecuador, it said in a statement published on X.
