Primark has launched a new collection of ceramics for decoration and tableware, with prices starting at €3. Some of these pieces, in the shape of vegetables, recall the iconic style of Bordallo Pinheiro, a Portuguese brand of reference in the world of ceramics. Find out more about this collection in this article.
Naturalism is the essence of Bordallian imagery, which remains alive almost 140 years after the inauguration of the first Faianças Factory in Caldas da Rainha, founded by Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro. At the end of the 19th century, this renowned artist began creating unique ceramic pieces, applying them to carrycots, baskets, giant plates, vases and pots. The tradition continues today with cabbage-shaped platters, tomato-shaped terrines and salad bowls that imitate artichokes, pieces that are an essential part of the catalog of the century-old company, currently managed by Grupo Visabeira.
Bordallo Pinheiro crockery, as stated by , have become symbols of excellence in ceramic design, appreciated inside and outside Portugal. In 2021, the American brand Tory Burch was accused of selling imitations of similar pieces, but at much higher prices – one dish, for example, cost up to seven times more than the original.
Despite cases like this, Bordallo Pinheiro’s naturalistic style continues to influence several brands, including more affordable labels. One example is Zara Home, which has already collaborated with the Portuguese factory. Now, it’s Primark’s turn to present a line inspired by this style, with affordable ceramic pieces that pay attention to the national brand’s naturalistic design.
Vegetable-inspired pieces and new contemporary designs
Highlights of the Primark collection include bread plates and vegetable-shaped bowls, which combine functionality with attractive design. Pieces most easily associated with the Bordallian style include interpretations in the form of textured artichokes, bright red tomatoes and cabbage leaves, available as plates or bowls to create complete sets.
In addition to pieces that refer to naturalism, Primark also invests in more modern and minimalist options. There are plates in neutral tones with golden details, enamel cups and bowls with simple, clean lines, which offer a contemporary alternative for those who prefer a more discreet style.
The new collection is now available in the Irish retailer’s stores, and you can check availability online. Prices are quite competitive: pieces start at €3, and dishes cost €6 per unit. It could be a good opportunity to combine functionality, design and accessibility at your desk.
