Hungary’s state media must learn independence again


Budapest – In 2011, Aranka Szavuly was fired from a Hungarian state broadcaster for protesting against government interference in news broadcasts. The journalist is now looking for a job again – but believes that after Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule, a fundamental reform of Hungary’s media landscape is necessary. Until his defeat by Péter Magyar in the April election, Orbán had strictly controlled the media as head of government.
