The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, lamented this Sunday the death of former North American head of state Jimmy Carter, remembering his “symbolic support” for democratic consolidation in Portugal.

In a statement published on the official page of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that he sent his colleague from the United States of America, Joe Biden, “a message of heartfelt condolences” on the death of Jimmy Carter, at the age of 100.

In that message, the note reads, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “highlighted Jimmy Carter’s tireless efforts in promoting human rights and peace on the international scene, themes to which he dedicated a significant part of his life after the conclusion of his presidency and in final years of his life.”

“He also invoked the symbolic support of Jimmy Carter, and his administration, for democratic consolidation in Portugal”, he says.

In the note, Marcelo also states that, “in this hour of grief”, he joins “everyone who remembers with admiration the life of Jimmy Carter and his contribution to humanity”.

Former President of the United States of America and Nobel Peace Prize laureate (2002) Jimmy Carter died today at the age of 100, his son said as quoted by the North American media.

Elected to the White House in 1976, beating then President Gerald Ford by a marginal margin of votes and in a country still marked by the “Watergate” scandal that forced President Richard Nixon to resign, Carter assumed the role of 39th President of the United States for just four years.

The Democratic politician, who voted in the last US presidential elections, held on November 5, had undergone treatments to try to stop an aggressive form of melanoma, with tumors that had spread to the liver and brain.

His death was confirmed by his son without providing further details, according to The Washington Post, and also by the Carter Center organization, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Withdrawn from all public life, Jimmy Carter benefited from palliative care at his home in Plains, Georgia, since February 2023.

His last public appearance took place in November 2023, during the funeral of his wife, Rosalynn.

Carter, a man who often spoke of his Christian faith, was the oldest living American president.
