Latvia could seize the so-called Russian shadow fleet. This was announced by its Prime Minister, Evika Siliņa, who also emphasized that the country is prepared to defend its borders and infrastructure “both on land and at sea.”
In an interview for the BBC, collected by the Ukrainian media the president has highlighted the “readiness of your country to respond quickly to threats“If necessary, we will exercise our right to seize the ships of the ‘shadow fleet.'”
For his part, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte “previously announced that he would increase the military presence in the Baltic Sea after the damage to an underwater cable between Finland and Estonia”. The publication confirms that, in the latest package of sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia, “the activities of ships from third countries are restricted, targeting the shadow fleet.”
According to the media, on December 25, the last attack occurred on one of these cables that run through the Baltic. That day, “energy transmission between Finland and Estonia was later interrupted. Although the authorities do not rule out vandalism.”
