Of course, there are plenty of other worthwhile narrative games besides these, but we try to balance the bigger titles with some unmissable indies. Take a look at our complete list below and take advantage of the end of the year to finally discover great story-focused games that arrived in 2024.

1. Metaphor ReFantasia

We bet that a lot of people can’t bear to see it on all the best of the year lists, but we couldn’t leave it out of the best history games of 2024, right?! As always, Atlus took great care in the narrative and characters of this game, which should please even more those who don’t like the high school theme of Persona, for example.

2. Open Roads

It’s one of the lesser-known games on our list and is definitely a recommendation for anyone who wants something strictly narrative and doesn’t care about watching the gameplay in the background. The game is also short, so you can finish it in 2 to 3 hours depending on your approach. As the plot focuses on the relationship between mother and daughter, as well as the discovery of family secrets, this may not be a story that resonates with everyone in the same way, but I think it’s worth trying.

3. Indicate

If you want something off the beaten path and focused on history, try Indika!

Another very short indie game focused more on the story is , a title that is definitely much stranger and more surreal than our other suggestions. Its premise puts us in the role of a Russian nun in the 19th century who is still discovering herself, but with the detail that she talks to the Devil himself. Even if the gameplay isn’t brilliant, its proposal makes up for it and this ends up being a good bet for those who want to break away from this year’s most common games.

4. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Returning to story games in a more traditional style, we have the excellent . The game gives us two protagonists, Antea and Red, who need to discover the root of a curse that torments several settler communities. The plot itself involves themes such as grief, fear and the darkness that can hide where we least expect it. For those who don’t know, the game is developed by DON”T NOD, who worked on Vampyr and the first games in the Life is Strange franchise.

5. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth

It may seem a little strange to put a remake on the list of best history games, after all, it would be normal to already know everything that happens in the game. But with , we know that many things are very different and make this saga unique enough to deserve its place among our recommendations. Of course you would need to play Final Fantasy VII: Remake to enjoy Rebirthbut at least there’s enough time until the final game in this trilogy comes out.

6. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

I say without a shadow of a doubt that it is easily one of the best games released in 2024 and the only reason it wasn’t more prominent in the awards was because it was released three weeks before the end of the year. In addition to being a lot of fun, we were surprised by how much the game looked like one of Indy’s old adventures and that it was even more enjoyable than his most recent film. Of course, much of this is due to its writing, plot and charismatic characters. As the game is on Game Pass, it is probably one of the easiest to check out on our list.

7. Mouthwashing

Finally, we have , which was one of the big surprises among indie games this year. This horror game tells the story of a crew condemned to a slow death on their own ship, whose energy and supplies will run out in a few months. In addition to the characters and excellent terrifying atmosphere, what really shines in this game is its dark narrative. We won’t say anything more because its outcome needs to be discovered by the player without any spoilers, so just trust and play Mouthwashing.
