The government information center denies that the Fidesz-KDNP government bloc is preparing for early elections.
The Hungarian opposition party Democratic Coalition (DK) will submit a draft resolution on the early dissolution of the legislature in the parliament. DK Chairman Ferenc Gyurcsány announced this in a video on Facebook on Friday, the TASR correspondent in Budapest reports.
“I think those who say that we don’t have to wait until the next (regular) election are right,” Gyurcsány said. As head of the DK parliamentary faction, he personally initiates the dissolution of parliament. The DK proposal clearly points to early elections, and Gyurcsány justified it by that “the country can no longer afford to waste time”.
Gyurcsány’s initiative coincides with the New Year speech of the chairman of the non-parliamentary party TISZA (Respect and Freedom) and MEP Péter Magyar, who is the strongest critic of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government. In it, Magyar called for early elections and announced that his party would switch to election campaign mode on January 6.
TISZA issued a statement on Thursday that early elections could realistically take place in the second half of April. According to Magyar, the TISZA party has taken the necessary steps to accelerate the selection of candidates for deputies and to finalize the program of its future government.
The Government Information Center (KTK) issued a statement on January 1 denying that the ruling Fidesz-KDNP bloc was preparing for early elections, as alleged by opposition voices. “Unlike some Western European countries, Hungary has political stability. The next parliamentary elections will be held in 2026 and all talk of saying otherwise is just a poor political trick,” the government document reads.
