Corinthians player involved in fatal accident

Rodrigo Garro was detained to provide clarification, but has since been released; case is treated as manslaughter

Rodrigo Garro, midfielder of , was involved in a traffic accident in General Pico, La Pampa, Argentina, in the early hours of this Saturday (Jan 4, 2025).

According to the newspapers Clarion e Olethe RAM pickup truck that Garro was driving collided head-on with a motorcycle driven by a 30-year-old man, who died at the scene. The player and a passenger in the vehicle did not suffer serious injuries. A breathalyzer test carried out on the player was positive, but with a low amount of alcohol in his blood.

Argentine authorities initially classified the incident as manslaughter – that is, without the intention to kill. The delegate responsible for the investigation stated that the expert still analyzes factors such as the speed of the car, traffic signs and road conditions to understand what led to the accident. Garro turned 27 this Saturday (January 4, 2025) and is on vacation in the country before returning to Brazil for pre-season.

The Corinthians midfielder was provisionally detained after a breathalyzer test. He gave a statement, was released and is now at home. Corinthians legal counsel is in contact with Garro’s lawyer in Argentina to offer support.

According to the newspaper The Nation the accident happened around 4:30 am Argentina time, when Garro tried to make a turn, but ended up colliding with a motorcycle. Authorities continue to investigate the case.

The São Paulo club signed the player at the beginning of 2024 for an estimated value of US$6 million, around R$30 million at the price at the time. Garro has a monthly salary estimated at more than R$800,000 paid by the club. He played 62 games last season, scored 13 goals and made 12 assists.

Corinthians issued a statement stating that “is following the investigations and will wait for their conclusion to speak about the case again.”
