Tesla factory in Shanghai begins trial production

The company said to Xinhua that the unit is dedicated to manufacturing Tesla’s energy storage batteries, called Megapack, whose mass production is expected to fully begin in the 1st quarter of 2025.

The project, Tesla’s 2nd factory in Shanghai, highlights the North American company’s commitment to investing in the world’s 2nd largest economy.

The factory’s construction set a new record for “Tesla speed” in China, as the facility was built and opened in just 1 year, in 2019.

The new factory was built with an initial production capacity of 10,000 units per year, which equates to around 40 GWh of energy storage.

Covering an area of ​​approximately 200,000 m², the site represents a total investment of around 1.45 billion yuan (US$201.7 million), according to the administration of the Lin-gang Special Area of ​​the China Pilot Free Trade Zone. China.

The factory is the first of its kind built by Tesla outside the United States, following the opening of its megafactory in 2019, which involved an initial investment of more than 50 billion yuan.

At the megafactory’s launch ceremony in May, Tesla signed an agreement with Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, guaranteeing the 1st batch of orders for its Megapacks in China.
