During the campaign, Donald Trump pledged to massively increase fuel production on American soil.

President Joe Biden on Monday banned mining in US coastal waters just weeks before Donald Trump takes office. His successor, as part of the campaign, pledged to massively increase the production of fossil fuels on American soil. TASR informs about it according to the AFP agency.

According to a statement from the White House, the ban applies to the entire Atlantic coast of the United States and the eastern Gulf of Mexico, as well as the Pacific coast of California, Oregon and Washington, and part of the Bering Sea off Alaska.

Biden is taking these steps under the Continental Shelf Act of 1953, which gives the federal government authority over the use of natural resources at sea. A White House statement said the declaration protects more than 625 million acres (253 million hectares) of coastal waters.

“As the climate crisis continues to threaten communities across the country and we transition to a clean energy economy, now is the time to protect these coasts for our children and grandchildren,” Biden said in a statement.

The ban has no set date for how long it will be in place, and it could be legally and politically difficult for Trump to reverse once he takes office.
