Artist won the award for “Best Actress in a Drama Film” for her performance in “I’m Still Here”, beating Hollywood stars in the competition
A by Fernanda Torres at the Golden Globes in the early hours of this Monday (January 6, 2025) moved Brazil. The actress won the award for “Best Actress in a Drama Film” for her performance in “I’m Still Here”, beating Hollywood stars such as Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet.
Another moving scene of the night, however, was the reaction of Fernanda Montenegro, Torres’ mother, celebrating her daughter’s victory.
Montenegro already competed for the Golden Globe in 1999, for his performance in “Central do Brasil”. She lost the competition to Cate Blanchett, who starred in the feature film “Elizabeth”.
In the video, Montenegro appears sitting in an armchair anxiously awaiting the declaration of the winner by actress Viola Davis. When Fernanda Torres’ name is announced, Montenegro raises her arms, cheering, while other people who were with her scream and celebrate.

The recording was published on the Instagram profile of theater producer Alex Júnior, who was with Montenegro, following the awards ceremony. He valued what he called “privilege” to be with the actress at that moment.
“And the Golden Globe goes to: Fernanda Torres! What a privilege to watch with Dona Fernanda Montenegro and her family,” Alex wrote.
In his acceptance speech for the award, Torres made a point of mentioning his mother. She also referenced Eunice Paiva, a character played by the actress in “I’m Still Here”, which is based on the book of the same name by writer Marcelo Rubens Paiva about the story of her mother after the disappearance of deputy Rubens Paiva in 1971, during the dictatorship.
“I want to dedicate the award to my mother. She was on this stage 25 years ago and this is proof that art can endure throughout life, even in difficult times, like the incredible Eunice Paiva, who I play. With everything that happens in the world today, with so much fear, this is a film that helps us think about how to survive in difficult times, like the ones we are living in.”, said Fernanda Torres, excited.
Even though she lost the individual award in 1999, Fernanda Montenegro took to the Golden Globe stage alongside Walter Salles, who directed “Central do Brasil” and also “Não Isso Aqui”, after the feature film won the award for best foreign film.
“My English is not very good, but my soul is better. On behalf of our producer Arthur Cohn, a true lion, Walter Salles, a wonderful director, Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and Marcy Bloom, from Sony Classics, thank you very much for your support of ‘Central do Brasil’. I am very, very happy that our film was so well received and touched your hearts. Thank you very much!”, said Montenegro, at the time.
Shortly afterwards, Montenegro was nominated for the Oscar for “Best Actress”, while Central do Brasil competed for the academy trophy for “Best Foreign Film”. The individual nomination was unprecedented for Brazilian cinema, but Fernanda, like the film, did not win the award.
REACTIONS ON NETWORKS
On social media, internet users celebrated Fernanda Torres’ victory. One of the feelings, in fact, was “revenge” for his mother’s defeat in 1999.
“Fernanda Montenegro gave birth to her own revenge, this is not a womb, it is a vigilante”, on X (formerly Twitter), an internet user.
Another internet user pointed out the coincidences of the Fernandas being mother and daughter and of both “Central do Brasil” and “Não Isso Aqui” being directed by Walter Salles.
“How can it be that the only Brazilian actresses nominated for a Golden Globe are mother and daughter and were directed by the same director and both are called Fernanda?”, no X.
Comedian Maurício Meirelles compared Fernanda Torres’ achievement to Pelé’s performance in the 1958 World Cup, when the King was top scorer and champion at just 17 years old.
“Winning a Golden Globe, against American actresses, speaking in Portuguese is more unlikely than what Pelé did in 1958”, .
Still in the comparison with the football world, an internet user suggested a reception at the airport for Fernanda Torres, just like a football team.
“Am I the only one who thinks we should do an ‘AeroFernanda’ and receive her with a rocket man and an organized fight at the airport?”, .
