According to INE, 2025 is the highest point in the historical series of “Statistics on Acquisitions of Spanish Nationality by Residents”, started in 2013. The almost 300,000 acquisitions contrast with the 66,498 in 2017, when the lowest number was recorded. Catalonia, with 70,933 registrations, and the Community of Madrid, with 69,566, were the autonomous communities at the top of this classification.

Foreigners from Latin America represent nine out of ten acquisitions. If they are of legal age, these people will be able to vote in the next elections, both general and regional and municipal.

Other details released by the Institute: the majority of foreigners who achieved nationality are women, with 55.4% compared to 44.6% of men. By age, according to INE, people between 30 and 39 years old were the largest group, followed by the group between 40 and 49 years old.

The most sought after way of acquiring nationality was by residence, with a total of 253,836 cases. Although the law requires legal and continuous residence for ten years in general, there are some exceptions, such as refugee or asylum status, nationality of countries such as Andorra, Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal or Sephardic origin, or marrying a Spaniard and being the grandson or son of Spanish origins.

Due to these possibilities, the average was six years of residence, as the most frequent year of arrival was 2019.
