Canada’s prime minister is expected to announce today that he will step down as leader of the Liberal Party, Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, citing three sources.
Sources told the Globe and Mail they don’t know exactly when Trudeau will announce his plans, but they estimate it will be before an emergency meeting of Liberal MPs convenes on Wednesday.
According to the same sources, it remains unclear whether Trudeau will step down immediately or remain prime minister until a new Liberal leader is chosen.
Trudeau’s departure will leave the party without a leader as polls show the Liberals trailing the main opposition Conservatives in an election due by the end of October.
Trudeau has discussed with Finance Minister Dominique LeBlanc the possibility of appointing an interim party leader and prime minister, a source told the paper, adding that would be unfeasible if LeBlanc plans to run for the leadership.
